Sterea Ellada

In Sterea Ellada, apart from famous historical monuments like the Acropolis, lies the country's capital, Athens, the place where democracy was first established in the Ancient world. The great port of Piraeus is situated to the south-west of Athens, around 10km from the centre of town. A group of small islands (Aigina, Hydra, Salamina, Spetses) lie to the south of Attica. Euboea, a large island located opposite mainland Greece, also presents many peculiarities as its inhabitants maintain their traditional customs and celebrations.

At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the sanctuary of Delphi, home to the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was thought to be the centre of the world in Ancient Greece.

Sterea Ellada is the central region of Greece, and one of the most mountainous. The slopes are forested with pine, beech and poplar trees. Running water and calm lakes interchange with uncounted coves and beaches. Hidden shores and picturesque islets dotl the south-western coasts. The varied landscapes of the region remain beautiful no matter the season. The climate is dry in the interior and temperate along the coasts.
