Administrative structure of the State


Greece is divided into 13 administrative units, named "Peripheries" (Regions):

  • Eastern Macedonia & Thrace
  • Central Macedonia
  • Western Macedonia
  • Epirus
  • Thessaly
  • Western Greece
  • Ionian Islands
  • Central Greece
  • Attica
  • Peloponnese
  • Northern Aegean Islands
  • Southern Aegean Islands
  • Crete

The first level of local government consists of municipalities “Dimos”, or “Kinotita”. In total there are 900 municipalities and 133 communities.

The second level of local government is the “Nomarchia” (Prefecture). In total the are 54 prefectures and the autonomous administrative region of Mount Athos (Agion Oros)
